Senior Veterinary Surgeon | Gold-standard first opinion | Supportive environment | Great client relations

Veterinary Surgeon - Leicestershire, Midlands

Ref: 159Wednesday 22 June 2022

£55,000 - £65,000

Would you like a job that made coming to work feel like coming home? Do you want to work somewhere that is truly different and where the word 'family' means what it should?

Our clients are looking for a like-minded Veterinary Surgeon to join their practice where each and every member of the team is invested in a common goal – to deliver gold-standard community pet care.

About the practice

The owners opened the practice 8 years ago and have built something truly special in the heart of Leicestershire. They closed their books two years ago to ensure focus on each and every one of their clients. All of whom they have built great relationships with; some who have even gone on to become staff.

There is no standing on ceremony here. Everyone is equal. Everyone pitches in. Everyone answers the phone and everyone makes the tea. This collaborative approach is evident throughout. The team learn from each other daily and most importantly, they support each other both professionally and personally. This is what we mean by 'family'.

The goal is always to provide the best service possible. If this means flexibility on fees, home visits or transporting clients, then it can be done. There are no constraints here and the freedom to have discussions on what really is best.

In terms of kit, there's everything you would expect in first opinion (ultrasound, dental xray, in-house lab). There are separate cat and dog wards, with additional space for large dogs or patients requiring isolation. Theatre is complemented by three consult rooms. There is a calm space at the back of the practice for those clients that need it. Refurbishment plans are underway, with increased kennelling space (this includes staff dogs!).

There is strong surgical and medical knowledge across the practice team, so very little needs to be referred. For orthopaedic, neurology or ophthalmology, they have close relationships with local referral centres they work in partnership with. You can be confident therefore, that your patients are going to receive the best care.

The nursing team is exceptional. All the Registered Veterinary Nurses here are very experienced. They're organised and knowledgeable. Everything you could wish for.

The Role

The time has come for both owners to take a step back and so they are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon keen to help them run the practice; doing so themselves to cover holidays or as required. You will be involved in the mentoring of the recent graduates (2020 and 2021), both of whom have already progressed beyond expectation. And you'll be asked to take a proactive approach to building a relationship with your clients and fully managing your own cases.

Current rota can be run over 4 days, with one full ops day a week. Consults are run in two blocks each day, with a few hours in the middle of the day for case work ups, notes, calls etc. Final appointments are at 5pm, so you have time to finish up before leaving on time.

The practice are immensely proud of running their own OOH service. This is currently one night a week and 1:5 weekends on call. Vets are always on with an RVN. It's not a busy service, but there is always time off after a weekend and rota flexibility if needed.

  • £40,000 - £60,000 (open for negotiation)
  • RCVS and BVA/BSAVA paid
  • Discounted pet care
  • CPD allowance to suit individual needs
  • Access to Vet Dynamics leadership/business courses if desired

About you

After working in first opinion practice for a number for years, you will be comfortable and confident with most surgical procedures (including emergency cases) along with all consulting scenarios. You must have the right to work in the UK.

We recognise that competence is more than just your ability to perform a procedure or run a day of consults, so to thrive here, you'll be a certain type of person too:

  • You'll want to come and work here if you are as passionate now about first opinion practice as you were when you qualified and you love sharing that passion with others.
  • You'll love asking questions and answering them in return
  • You don’t take yourself too seriously and have a sense of humour
  • You'll have strong listening skills and open to respecting other ways of doing things
  • You're honest, compassionate and accepting. If you make a mistake, own it and the team will have your back. You'll do the same for them.
  • You're keen to share case outcomes and discussions with your team
  • Your happiest days at work are those when you know you've been able to do your best
